About Sue

Sue Watt is an experienced freelance travel writer based in London. She is a member of the British Guild of Travel Writers, the International Travel Writers Alliance and Travelwriters UK.

Indulging her love of adventure travel and exploring lesser-known destinations, Sue is regularly published in the UK’s national press and magazines, including The Daily Telegraph, The Independent, The Independent on Sunday, Daily Express, Sunday Express, Wexas’ Traveller magazine, guardian.co.uk, CNN Traveller and Italy Magazine, and in Sydney Morning Herald and Vacations & Travel magazine in Australia. She is a regular contributor to Travel Africa Magazine.

Maasai on Matemwe Beach, ZanzibarSue has also worked on radio and television broadcasts giving interviews on adventure travel and responsible tourism, is co-author of Footprint’s Tanzania Handbook and Footprint’s Zanzibar and Pemba Focus Guide and contributor to 1001 Escapes to Make Before You Die.

Before turning to writing, Sue lived a life of crime, professionally at least, working for the Crown Prosecution Service and, having completed a post-graduate MBA, as a business manager for a leading criminal law barristers’ chambers. In 2004, she packed in the day job to travel around Nepal and then Africa, vowing to leave her criminal past behind her. Inspired by her belated gap year, she took the precarious plunge into travel writing and has never looked back.

Sue’s writing mainly focuses on Africa and Nepal, but she can turn her journalistic skills and insight to destinations worldwide. Having grown up in and still very much connected to Wales and with a home in Italy, she writes on these areas too. She is passionate about responsible tourism, believing that tourism can and should always work with local communities and conservation, not against them, and is often commissioned to cover new and exciting responsible tourism projects.

As keen photographers, Sue and her partner, Will Whitford, regularly have their photographs published to accompany her features and all the images on this website have been taken by them.

Sue provides professional, high quality copy and images to deadline and enjoys excellent working relationships with editors, tour operators and PR representatives. For feature commissions, reviews, round-ups or further information, please contact Sue.
